Drip or Flood?
Signs You Need Faucet Repair
A faucet that won't shut off needs a call today. A drip can wait a few days, but it adds up. Here they are, worst first.
Faucet Won't Shut Off
Call now. Turn the valves under the sink clockwise until they close.
Water Under the Sink
Call now. Close the valves under the sink before it soaks the cabinet.
A Steady Drip
Call this week. One drip a second can waste over 3,000 gallons a year.
Shower Keeps Dripping
Call this week. A worn cartridge in the valve is the usual cause.
Shower Runs Hot, Then Cold
Call this week. The valve is supposed to hold the temperature steady.
Handle Hard to Turn
Call this week. A stiff handle often means a worn cartridge inside.
Weak Flow at One Tap
Worth a look. Scale in the aerator at the tip can slow the flow.
Crust Around the Spout
Worth a look. That is hard water scale, and it builds up inside too.
A Faucet Showing Its Age
Worth a look. Newer bathroom faucets use 1.5 gallons a minute or less.
Faucet Won't Shut Off? Do This First
- Find the valves under the sink.
- Turn them clockwise until tight.
- Then call Bergheim Plumbing.

Fix It or Replace It
New Cartridge or New Faucet
Most drips come from one worn part, not a worn-out faucet. We look first and tell you which one you have, so you don't buy a faucet you didn't need.
- Old, worn washers and gaskets are the usual cause of a leaky faucet.
- The cartridge inside controls the water flow. When it wears out, we swap it.
- A cracked body, a pitted finish or a faucet with no parts left is a replacement.
- Short faucet jobs are a big part of our week.
- Newer bathroom faucets use 1.5 gallons a minute or less, against 2.2 for the old standard.
Sink or Shower
A Sink Faucet and a Shower Valve Fix Differently
Both drip for the same reasons. A shower valve sits inside the wall, so the work to reach it looks different.
Sink Faucet
- Where it lives
- On the counter, with its valves right under it.
- What usually fails
- A washer, gasket or cartridge.
- How we get to it
- Close the valves under the sink and swap the part.
- If it needs replacing
- A new faucet on the same holes, with new supply lines.
Shower Valve
- Where it lives
- Inside the wall, behind the handle and trim.
- What usually fails
- The cartridge in the valve body.
- How we get to it
- Shut the water off, then pull the cartridge through the trim.
- If it needs replacing
- A new valve must be pressure balanced or thermostatic.
Not sure which one is dripping? Tell us where the water shows up, and we bring the parts for both. That saves you a second trip.

What a Faucet Swap Includes
What Comes With a New Faucet
A new faucet is more than the part you see on the counter. These come with every swap we do, in the kitchen or the bath.
- New supply lines, so an old hose doesn't fail under a new faucet.
- New shutoff valves under the sink when the old ones are stuck or worn.
- The faucet set, sealed and tightened down to the counter.
- The water run and every connection checked for drips.
- The aerator cleaned of scale, so the flow comes out full.
Why Faucets Wear Out Here
Hard Water Is Hard on Faucets
Most well water around San Antonio runs over 200 parts per million of hardness, per a state report. That hardness leaves calcium on everything it touches. Faucets take the worst of it, because they sit wet all day.
It builds up in the aerator at the tip and inside the cartridge. That is how a handle gets stiff and a drip starts. The EPA says to check your faucets for scale that slows the flow.
A water softener stops most of it where the water comes in. Between visits, white vinegar clears scale from an aerator. A clean aerator also brings back most of a weak stream.

Straight Answers
What Callers Ask About Faucets
How Much Does Faucet Repair Cost?
A worn cartridge or washer is the small fix, and it costs less than a new faucet. A shower valve in the wall takes more work. You hear the price before any work starts. Coming out and looking costs you nothing, so the first answer is free.
Why Is My Bathtub Faucet Leaking?
Usually a worn washer, gasket or cartridge inside the valve. The drip gets past the worn part even with the handle off. Replacing that part most often stops it.
How Do I Replace a Shower Cartridge?
The water to the shower goes off first. Then the handle and trim come off, and the old cartridge pulls out. The new one has to match the valve, so we bring the right part.
Is a Dripping Faucet Worth Fixing?
Yes. The EPA says one drip a second can waste more than 3,000 gallons a year. Most drips are a washer, gasket or cartridge, which makes it a short job.
Should I Replace My Kitchen Faucet?
Replace it if the body is cracked, the finish is gone or parts are hard to find. Otherwise a new cartridge usually does it. Newer faucets also use less water.
Why Is the Water Pressure Low at One Faucet?
Often it is scale in the aerator, the screen at the tip. Hard water leaves calcium there, which a water softener stops. If cleaning it doesn't help, the cartridge or valve may be the cause.
Can You Replace a Shower Valve?
Yes. Under the plumbing code, a new shower valve has to be pressure balanced or thermostatic. It sits inside the wall, so we look at the access first and tell you what it takes.
Do You Fix Faucets in Boerne and New Braunfels?
Yes. From the shop in Spring Branch we cover Boerne, New Braunfels, Bulverde, Bergheim, Leon Springs and North San Antonio. Farther out? Call and ask.
