Leak or Just a Drip?

Signs You Need Plumbing Repair

A burst pipe or a gas smell can't wait. A running toilet can wait a day or two. Here they are, worst first, with what to do for each one.

  • A Pipe Has Burst

Call now. Shut off the main water to the house first.

  • You Smell Gas

Call now. Get out first, and don't flip a switch or use the phone inside.

  • A Stain on the Ceiling

Call now. A stain or damp spot can mean a pipe leaking above it.

  • Meter Moves With Taps Off

Call this week. That means a leak somewhere on your property.

  • Damp Spots on the Floor

Call this week. Moisture around the slab can mean a slab leak.

  • Toilet Runs on Its Own

Call this week. An old or worn flapper in the tank is the usual cause.

  • Low Pressure Everywhere

Call this week. A water leak on the property can drop the pressure.

  • One Slow Sink Drain

Worth a look. A clog near the trap is often a short fix.

  • A Water Bill That Climbs

Worth a look. The average home leaks more than 9,300 gallons a year.

Pipe Burst? Do This First

  1. Find the shutoff at the water meter.
  2. Turn it off to stop the water.
  3. Then call Bergheim Plumbing.

Fix It, Then Find Why

Fix What Failed, Then Find Why

A leak has a cause. We fix the part that failed, then look for what made it fail, so you don't call us twice. Here is the work we see most.

  • Day to day, most of our work is slab leaks and basic repairs.
  • Leaks under sinks, running toilets and fixtures that drip.
  • Burst pipes, with the shutoff shown to you so you can stop the next one fast.
  • Low pressure traced to its cause, from a clogged aerator to a hidden leak.
  • A drain that keeps clogging gets jetted clear, not snaked again and again.

What a Leak Call Includes

What Every Leak Call Covers

Finding a leak is half the job, and guessing costs you drywall. These come with every repair, from a sink trap to a slab.

  • The meter test: every tap off while we watch the meter for 10 minutes.
  • The leak found before anything gets opened up.
  • The repair made with the water off and the area dried out.
  • New pipe held under pressure for 15 minutes before it gets covered, the way the code asks.
  • On a slab leak, both options laid out: fix the spot or run a new line.

Why Leaks Get Missed

Leaks Hide Until the Bill Comes

Most leaks are quiet. The EPA puts the average home's leaks at more than 9,300 gallons a year. Nine percent of homes lose 50 gallons or more a day.

A leak under the slab can run for a long time before anyone sees it. Stains, mildew or damp spots on a wall, floor or ceiling are the signs to look for. So is a patch of floor that stays wet.

The water meter tells on it. Turn every tap off, inside and out, and watch the meter for 10 minutes. If it moves, water is going somewhere, and it is time to give us a call.

How a Repair Call Goes

From the Leak to a Dry House

Six steps, whether it is a running toilet or a leak under the slab. The first look costs you nothing.

  1. Call and Say What You Found

A drip, a stain, a running toilet or water where it shouldn't be. Say if it is still running.

  2. Find It, at No Charge

We test the meter and trace the leak. Coming out and looking costs you nothing.

  3. Hear the Fix and the Price

You get one answer and one price before anything is opened up. Then you decide.

  4. Water Off, Then the Repair

We shut the water off, open only what we need and fix the part that failed.

  5. Pressure Test the Fix

New pipe is held under pressure and checked before anything gets closed back up.

  6. Show You What Failed

You see the old part and what caused it. Then we tell you what to watch for.

Straight Answers

What Callers Ask About Repairs

How Much Does a Plumbing Repair Cost?

The price follows what failed and how hard it is to reach. A running toilet is a small job, and a slab leak is a bigger one. A line that keeps clogging may need hydro jetting. You hear the price before any work.

How Do I Know If I Have a Slab Leak?

Turn off every tap inside and out, then watch the meter for 10 minutes. If it moves, water is leaking somewhere. Stains, mildew or damp spots around the slab point the same way.

Where Is My Main Water Shutoff?

Most homes can shut off at the water meter. Find it and learn how it turns before you need it. We can show you on any visit.

Why Does My Toilet Keep Running?

Usually a worn flapper, the rubber seal in the tank. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank. If color shows in the bowl after 10 minutes, it leaks.

What Should I Do If a Pipe Bursts?

Shut off the main water to the house first. Then call us. After hours emergency service is available, so say it is an emergency when you call.

Why Is My Water Pressure Low?

Low at one tap? Often a clogged aerator or a worn cartridge in the faucet. Low everywhere can mean a leak on the property, so we check the meter first.

Do You Check Gas Lines for Leaks?

Yes. If you smell gas, get out first and don't touch a light switch. Once you are safe, call us. We check the line and fix what we find.

Do You Work in Bulverde and Leon Springs?

Yes. From the shop in Spring Branch we cover Bulverde, Leon Springs, Boerne, New Braunfels, Bergheim and North San Antonio. Farther out? Call and ask.
