Remodels

Repiping Goes In Before the Tile

In a kitchen or bath remodel, the plumbing goes in first. New lines, drains and valves get set and tested before the walls close. Once the tile is up, a leak behind it means tearing the tile back out.

  • We set the rough-in: supply lines, drains and the shower valve, before the tile or drywall.
  • A new shower valve has to be pressure balanced or thermostatic under the code.
  • New pipe is pressure tested and held for 15 minutes before it gets covered.
  • In San Antonio, new faucets, sinks and toilets take a permit, and only a licensed plumber can pull it.
  • We came out of new construction, so rough-in is work we know well.

Repipes

Fix the Leak or Repipe the House

One leak is a repair. Leaks that keep turning up in different places can mean the pipe itself is done. Here is how the two compare, side by side.

Repair the Leak

When it makes sense
One leak in otherwise sound pipe.
What the work takes
Open the spot, fix it and test it.
The paperwork
Depends on the job and the city.
What you end up with
The leak fixed. The rest of the pipe stays as it was.

Repipe the House

When it makes sense
Leaks in more than one place, or old pipe failing.
What the work takes
New supply lines run through the house, then tested.
The paperwork
A plumbing permit, pulled by a licensed plumber.
What you end up with
New pipe the code approves: PEX, CPVC or copper.

We tell you straight which one your house needs. A repipe is a big job, and we won't sell one to fix a single leak. If one leak turns into three, we talk about it then.

What a Repipe Includes

What Every Repipe Covers

A repipe is planned before a single wall gets opened. We map the runs, pick the pipe and set the order of the rooms. These come with every one we do.

  • A plumbing permit, pulled by a licensed plumber, where the city asks for one.
  • Pipe the plumbing code approves, PEX, CPVC or copper, picked for the house.
  • New lines tested tight under pressure before any wall is closed.
  • A plan for which walls get opened, and what gets patched after, agreed before we cut.
  • The old lines capped off, so nothing is left hanging in the wall.

Permits Around Here

The Permit Comes With the Job

In San Antonio, putting in faucets, sinks, toilets or sewer lines takes a permit. Only a state licensed contractor can pull a plumbing permit there. Nearly every bath remodel touches one of those.

New Braunfels asks for a permit any time a plumbing system is altered, repaired or replaced. That covers most repipes and most bath remodels. Boerne and the county have their own rules, and we check them before we start.

Texas law says plumbing is done by a licensed plumber, or under one. So the permit is in our price, and the city inspector sees the work before the walls close. When you sell the house, that permit is on record.

How a Remodel or Repipe Goes

From the First Look to Water On

Six steps, for a bath remodel or a whole house repipe. The permit and the inspection sit inside them, not on top.

  1. Call and Tell Us the Plan

A bath or kitchen remodel, or leaks that keep showing up. Tell us what you want done.

  2. Walk the House, at No Charge

We look at the pipe, the fixtures and what the walls hide. Coming out and looking costs you nothing.

  3. Hear the Plan and the Price

You get one plan and one price, with the permit in it. Then you decide.

  4. Permit, Then Rough-In

We pull the permit and set the new lines, drains and valves before the walls close.

  5. Pressure Test, Then Close Up

New lines are tested tight under pressure. Then the tile and drywall can go in.

  6. Trim Out and Turn It On

Faucets, valves and fixtures go on after the finish work. Then we run it all and check for leaks.

Straight Answers

What Callers Ask About Repipes

How Much Does It Cost to Repipe a House?

You get one price, with the permit in it, before any work. It follows the size of the house, how many fixtures it has and what the walls hide. The pipe you pick moves it too.

How Do I Know If My House Needs Repiping?

Leaks in more than one place, or the same pipe failing again and again, point that way. One leak is usually a repair. Stained ceilings in different rooms are another sign. We look first and tell you which one you have, and why.

What Pipe Do You Use for a Repipe?

The plumbing code approves PEX, CPVC and copper for water lines. Each has its place. We pick one with you, by the house, the walls we have to open and the budget.

Do I Need a Permit to Repipe?

Usually, yes. New Braunfels requires a permit to replace a plumbing system, and in San Antonio only a state licensed contractor can pull a plumbing permit. We handle it.

Can You Do the Plumbing for My Remodel?

Yes. We set the rough-in before the tile and drywall, test it, and come back to trim out the faucets and fixtures after the finish work. We can work with your contractor or with you directly.

Do I Need a New Shower Valve When I Remodel?

If the wall is open, it is the time to do it. A new shower valve must be pressure balanced or thermostatic, which holds the temperature steady. We set it before the tile.

Why Test New Pipe Before the Walls Close?

Because a leak is cheap to fix in an open wall. The code says new water pipe is tested tight under pressure and held for 15 minutes. We do it before the drywall goes up.

Do You Work in Boerne and New Braunfels?

Yes. From the shop in Spring Branch we cover Boerne, New Braunfels, Bulverde, Bergheim, Leon Springs and North San Antonio. Farther out? Call and ask.
